Mystic Seaport: my first taste of American lighthouse porn

I didn’t spend much time in Connecticut during my road trip of New England but it was my first full day ever in North America and wanted something nice and easy to do. A short drive to Mystic on the coastline was the order of the day as I got to see many historical boats, walk around an outdoor museum and got my first taste of lighthouse porn in the area. (I love taking photos of lighthouses and in this part of the world, there are many beautiful lighthouses in rugged locations which I had to check out later on).

Parking up outside the museum, I had to admit I was thinking there wouldn’t be many people here as the place was basically all about boats and history. I am not sure why I was thinking that but when I paid up and walked through to the main yard, the place was packed with people. Families were walking about with their young children, letting them loose but at the same time teaching them. I also had to admit I didn’t really know much about the place so I found myself doing a lot of reading whilst walking around.

Mystic Seaport began as a modest collection of nautical odds and ends which was located in an old mill as far back as the late 1920’s and is now the largest maritime museum in the world. Holy cow, was it? I didn’t know that, so I was doing something big on my first day in the states and it’s something totally amazing. This perked me up as the weather was kinda poo the day I visited. The whole complex is 19 acres big (haven’t got a clue but it’s a big area) with about forty buildings on site open to the public. The buildings houses banks, chapel, tavern, schoolhouse, rope-making shops, it was a huge museum. There were volunteers working in each building and would tell a story about the place and the history. What began as a trip for a quick walk-around for at least two hours turned into a whole day. Also as it rained, coming inside also kept me dry.

The clouds moved away and it was time to check out the seafront. I caught an eye on the Thomas Oyster house which was initially used as a culling shop to sort out the oysters by its size before being turned into a place where oysters were shuck before shipping them away on ice. Whilst walking around in there it did stink a bit but that didn’t put me off, I am sure it was just the smell of a lot of old rope. Nearby is the L.A. Dunton, a schooner which is one of the last existing examples of round-bow fishing vessels in New England.

Then I got my first taste of lighthouse porn! There is a beautiful wooden white-coloured structure on where the coastline bends. The building is a copy of the one on Nantucket island not far from here (somewhere near Cape Cod) and this was the second lighthouse to be built in New England. Doesn’t it look mighty fine?

Then I checked out the Joseph Conrad, one of the museum’s largest three ships and is used as a training vessel. However this boat was built by the Danish folks back in Europe, so there is a little bit of European aspect here. Also further along is the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaling ship in the world which was built in the 1840s.

Before it was time to go, I had to check out a nice lunch in a restaurant here (my first on American soil) before seeing a show in the planetarium (yes, there is a space aspect to the seaport as well). The narrator was bloody fantastic and knew his stuff about outer space and talked whilst changing the images on the dome above me. He kept people interested and made space seem really interesting. This was so much better when I went to the London Planetarium (when it was opened) when I was a child.

After leaving Mystic I drove to a nearby village called Stonington because whilst at the seaport I took a short boat ride up the Mystic River, not lasting long but I spoke to a guy working the engine and told me if I wanted to catch photos of great lighthouses, then check out the one in the village not too far away. So I did and I got a nice grey bricked lighthouse. Another piece of amazing lighthouse porn.
